While taking in the sights of the White House, Lincoln Monument, and endless shopping, you’re going to work up an appetite. To soothe a rumbling stomach that craves healthy, fine cuisine, why not consider the Dupont Circle gem, Restaurant Nora? The owner, Nora Pouillon has spent most of her life surrounded by organic nutrition, and creatively shares her cooking expertise at her organic eatery set in Washington, D.C.
Born in Austria, Pouillon’s parents showered her with seasonal freshness and promoted healthy living. A relocation to the United States sent Pouillon into a state of shock, as she encountered an America filled with overly processed and chemical-laden foods. Thus, her quest to transform organic foods into delicious dishes was realized through the establishment of Restaurant Nora. Twenty years later (in 1999), the eatery hit a milestone – becoming the first certified organic restaurant in the nation. Since this achievement, only three other restaurants have accomplished the same goal.
Just a hop, skip and jump away from Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C., you will encounter assorted menu options that support sustainable agriculture. When in season, expect the savory flavors of grass-fed beef, free-range chickens, handmade goat cheeses, freshly picked wild mushrooms, and local applewood smoked trout to fill the restaurant. You never know what to expect at Restaurant Nora, as the menu changes on a daily basis.
A sample of meals you may find on any given day includes:
* Local Tempura Squash Blossoms with Chive Goat Cheese Stuffing, Cucumber Salad, Shaved Fennel, Green Goddess Sauce
* Grilled Amish Chicken Breast with Potato Salad, Crimson Runner Beans, Ovendried Tomato, Tempura Onions, Orange Moppin Sauce
