The music industry seems to have managed to fly under the environmental radar. There is, however, an organization out there that is trying to promote change and action from within. Reverb is proving that you don’t have to compromise on your musical tastes to uphold your environmental values.

The birth of an eco-music revolution

Reverb was founded in 2004, in Portland, by an inspired musician and environmentalist husband and wife team. Set up as a non-profit organization that is focused on providing turn-key green programs for musical tours, Reverb’s vision is to engage musical fans around the world to take action on environmental issues. Their use of grassroots outreach programs to educate music fans in addition to  partnership development with internationally-renown bands like Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Maroon 5 has given Reverb a truly global reach.

Driving sustainable change one step at a time

According to Reverb, we can all be active participants in protecting the environment. They believe that “being green is not all or nothing; many people doing some things will have more impact than some people doing everything.” Through this principle Reverb is creating real and measurable change on a large scale

Reverb works closely with music artists, record labels and radio stations to promote sustainable practices within the industry. They also engage fans online and through greening concerts and music tours. There are different types of music fan outreach and education programs that come with each tour. For example, a festival-like eco-village might be hosted to display environmental issues and give fans the opportunity to meet local social and environmental groups. One of the valuable programs Reverb facilitates is the Online Carpooling, which is a resource for fans looking to share a car ride to and from the concert. It’s a fun way to get the party started ahead of the concert. Reverb also provides a Carbon Offset Program for fans at each show.

Reverb partners with Sheryl Crow

Sheryl Crow is well known for her passion for environmental causes. In partnership with Reverb, she is reaching out to her fans. With Reverb’s help, Sheryl’s 100 Miles from Memphis summer tour has incorporated a range of environmental activities and actions.

The Reverb Eco-Village was set up at each concert so that fans could learn about the community-based environmental groups in their own city. They partnered with Zimride to deliver an easy, on-line ride sharing service for each city the tour was held in. In addition, all the concert programs were printed on eco-friendly FSC certified paper and using soy based inks for printing.

Sheryl Crow’s band played their eco-part as well. Trucks and buses were filled with biodiesel fuel. Rigorous waste reduction programs were put in place both backstage and on the buses. Local and organic food was purchased for the band and biodegradable catering products were used. The carbon footprint from Sheryl Crow’s tour flights, trucks, buses, trucks and venues was calculated and offset by supporting programs in renewable energy.
